TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

I. Beginner

Every beginner student is unique, Shuai's professional experience as an instructor as well as a pianist allows her to assess the most appropriate method for each student and create a joyful studying atmosphere, which facilitates that student to develop interest in music. Shuai also gradually incorporates various music fundamentals into her instructions to help each student build solid piano techniques, including the understanding of the rhythm, tempo and dynamic, correct fingering, hand positioning, etc. Shuai also encourages the beginner student to participate in recitals.

II. Intermediate

Intermediate students possess better techniques and have a good understanding of music. At this stage, keyboard knowledge, harmonic progressions, complex rhythms and a keen ear for a good tone become imperative for further advancement. Shuai also teaches the intermediate student various music styles during different periods and ask the student to practice some important pieces from representing composers of these periods. In addition, Shuai encourages the intermediate student to participate in regular peer performance and occasional competitions.

III. Advanced

Advanced students have developed solid fingering techniques to derivative the repertoire. During Shuai's instructions, she focuses on the structure of particular repertoires and inspire the student to use creative thinking during the performance. She also encourages advanced students to enter local competitions and if applicable, hold solo recitals to challenge themselves.
